The month in numbers
May 2026 at a glance

Key takeaways
What May 2026 actually tells us
The market expanded, it didn't just reshuffle
Retails grew 23.3% year on year to 4,02,591 units, and every one of the top six OEMs sold more cars than it did in May 2025. This was growth, not share stolen from a shrinking pie.
Maruti Suzuki tightened its grip
Share moved from 37.87% to 40.97% — a gain of 3.1 percentage points and the largest single-OEM swing of the month. Its 41,211-unit addition alone is bigger than Hyundai's entire growth.
Tata Motors took back second place
39.2% growth lifted Tata to 55,544 units and pushed Mahindra & Mahindra to third, even though Mahindra also grew 10.4%. The gap between them is now just 4,233 units.
The tail is getting crowded
Renault and Nissan each grew more than 70%, Force Motors added 53.8%, and VinFast opened its India account with 1,238 units. The bottom half of the table is no longer static.

Methodology
All figures are passenger vehicle retail registration volumes for May 2026 and May 2025, reported at OEM group level. Sub-brands are consolidated under their parent group, so Skoda, Volkswagen and Audi appear together under Skoda Auto Volkswagen Group. Retail data reflects registrations at RTOs, not factory dispatches. Percentages are rounded to two decimals and may not sum to exactly 100%.
